Dear Potential Sponsor
I am writing as President of Student Robotics to inform you of the opportunity to support our exciting competition. Student Robotics is a student-led society at the University of Southampton. We organise a robotics competition for college/sixth-form students local to the Southampton area.
As a society we design, manufacture and distribute our own custom electronics - at no expensive to the schools involved. Students spend two academic terms designing and building fully autonomous robots (this is NOT Robot Wars!) in preparation for the spring time competition held at the University. School teams compete against each other to solve a selection of logistical tasks through clever mechanical design and strategic programming. We held our first ever competition in April 2008 with 9 Teams from X local schools and it was a success; with interest from local press and the Electronics & Computer Science department, Southampton University. We intend our second competition to be even better, with more teams and improvements to the hardware and competition games.
What do the participants get out of it?
- An enormous amount of fun
- A more realistic introduction into real-world engineering
- Team working skills
- Programming skills (most students have no experience of this during school)
- Time management
- Mechanical skills
- Testing
- An interest in pursuing Engineering subjects to a higher level
What do we (the society) get out of it?
- Valuable design experience
- New skills - PCB development, project management, hardware software co-design
- Financial skills, budgeting etc.
- Organisational experience
- A chance to work with students, helping them solve technical challenges, and passing on experience and skills.
Why get involved?
- Media attention
- Opportunity to encourage students to pursue engineering
- Product placement
- Develop links with the university, Electronics & Computer Science Department
- Support an exciting and novel competition
- An invitation to the competition!
Why we need funding?
- To offer the schools the best technology to use in their robots costs money. By designing and fabricating our own modules we can ensure better value for money than 'off the shelf robotics kit' which is very expensive
- To open up the competition to more students
- To pay for increasing component and manufacturing costs
- Building hire and equipment hire for the competition day
How much does it cost?
Last year the competition cost just less than £10,000 pounds. This year with improvements to the electronics and rising manufacturing costs, we anticipate the completion will cost more [View 2009 budget].
How can you help?
- Single Donation
- Sponsoring a team(s)
- Covering the cost of PCB manufacture, building hire or electronics components
- Forwarding this email on to contacts who you think might be able to help
